The construction of wind power plants (WPPs) in the Caspian Sea is currently one of the top priorities for Azerbaijan's energy sector, according to Javid Abdullayev, the director of the Azerbaijan Renewable Energy Agency under the Ministry of Energy.

Abdullayev revealed that the process of identifying water bodies in accordance with Azerbaijani legislation is nearing completion. "We will appeal to the Cabinet of Ministers regarding these territories. Many companies are showing interest in building WPPs, and negotiations in this direction are ongoing. The next stage will involve selecting manufacturers and concluding contracts," he stated.

Preliminary analysis suggests that the total technical potential of wind energy in the Azerbaijani part of the Caspian Sea is estimated at 157 GW, with 35 GW in shallow basins and 122 GW in deep-water basins.

In 2023, Azerbaijan reached an agreement with ACWA Power, a Saudi Arabian company, which plans to establish wind power plants with a capacity of up to 1.5 GW offshore and 1 GW onshore in Azerbaijan.
