In Azerbaijan, battery storage systems with a capacity of approximately 250 MW and storage volume of 500 MWh are being integrated into the energy grid.
As Report informs, this was stated by the First Deputy Vice President of Azerenergy, Yusif Garayev, during his speech at the 30th Anniversary Baku Energy Forum.
According to him, this is the first project of such scale in the South Caucasus region.
Garayev emphasized that battery-type storage systems are one of the main conditions for efficient and safe management of renewable energy sources.
"For the integration of renewable energy into the power system and its safe management, two main factors are important. The first is the presence of strong integration and connection with the energy systems of neighboring countries. In this case, the need for storage systems is reduced. However, Azerbaijan's energy system has limited capabilities in this regard. For this reason, to manage 2 GW of renewable energy capacity across the country, battery storage systems with a capacity of 250 MW and storage volume of 500 MWh are being integrated into the energy grid," said Garayev.
He added that the connection of this system to the grid is planned by the end of 2025.
"An energy storage system of such large volume has not been used before in the countries of the South Caucasus, nor in the energy networks of Türkiye and Russia. This project will become the first and largest energy storage system by volume in the region," emphasized the representative of Azerenergy.
