German renewables developer and operator Energiequelle GmbH has reserved a site in Oulu, northern Finland, to build a green hydrogen plant with a total capacity of over 500 MW.
The project will be carried out in three stages between 2028 and 2033, the company said on Thursday.
The first phase covers the construction of a hydrogen production facility of up to 5 MW and a hydrogen refuelling station for buses and other heavy-duty vehicles. In the next phase, the capacity of the plant will be expanded to between 10 MW and 50 MW. If the necessary infrastructure is available, the generated hydrogen could be exported via a planned pipeline and the port of Oulu. The third phase involves the further increase of the capacity to between 100 MW and 500 MW.
The schedule and full size of the project depend on the market situation and the infrastructure availability, Energiequelle said. If the conditions are favourable, the first phase is expected to be completed by 2028, the company added.
Energiequelle is already participating in a similar hydrogen initiative in Bremerhaven, Germany, as part of which a filling station was opened in February.
The planned hub in Oulu, however, represents the German company's first public hydrogen project in Finland.
In addition to Energiequelle's initiative, transmission system operator Gasgrid Finland plans to establish hydrogen transport infrastructure to connect Oulu’s hydrogen production with the rest of Finland and other European countries, including Germany.
