Mainstream Renewable Power and Swedish floating wind specialist Hexicon AB have secured Natura 2000 permit for their up to 2.5-GW Mareld floating wind project in Swedish waters.
The permit was awarded by the County Administrative Board of Vastra Gotaland County. The developers said on Friday that receiving the government’s nod is the final step in the permitting process.
The Mareld offshore park is planned to be installed around 40 km (25 mi) west of Lysekil Municipality off the coast of Bohuslan, in the Swedish exclusive economic zone. Once in operation, it is expected to generate up to 12 TWh of electricity annually for the Swedish grid, supporting Western Sweden amid the anticipated increase in electricity demand by 2030. The site’s annual output is estimated to be enough to supply roughly two million homes.
Mainstream and Hexicon launched the Mareld project in 2023. Last year, their proposal was recommended to the government for approval by the Administrative Board in Vastra Gotaland County.
