Voltfang’s “Future Fab” production site was officially opened in Aachen, in the presence of North Rhine-Westphalia Minister-President Hendrik Wüst (of the Christian Democratic Union party) and the city’s mayor, Sibylle Keupen.
The plant will produce second-life battery storage systems for industrial, commercial, and large-scale applications. A planned annual production capacity of 250 MWh is expected next year, rising to 1 GWh before 2031.
Voltfang said the fab – at the TRIWO Technopark Aachen, on the former production site of electric car maker Next E-GO – is Europe’s largest production facility for second-life battery storage systems. Voltfang production began in April.
The company makes its storage units from second-life and surplus batteries from the European automotive industry and has already increased production capacity fivefold in the last 12 months.
“Today’s opening is an important step for Voltfang and a strong signal for the future of energy supply in Germany and Europe,” said David Oudsandji, co-founder and managing director of Voltfang. “Our vision is to develop high-performance battery storage systems for German and European industry and to manufacture them here in Germany.”
The manufacturer said the new plant would aim to make an important contribution to the economic, ecological, and social transformation of the lignite-mining region of North Rhine-Westphalia.
