The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) in New York State has approved contracts tied to 129 MW of battery energy storage capacity to be installed by Key Capture Energy LLC.
The 20-year contracts will provide the utility capacity and dispatch rights from two lithium-iron-phosphate batteries in Suffolk County, which will be designed to help enhance the reliability of the Long Island power grid, the energy storage developer said.
Specifically, Key Capture Energy will install a battery in Hauppauge hamlet, in the towns of Islip and Smithtown, and sell 79 MW/316 MWh of capacity to LIPA. The facility will connect to the existing Kings Substation and is expected to be completed by 2028.
The second project contracted by LIPA is a 50-MW BESS in Shoreham, the Town of Brookhaven. The system will be partly located at the site of a former nuclear power plant owned by LIPA, which will receive a guaranteed 200 MWh. This facility is also slated to become operational by 2028.
Both projects still need to receive final approval from the Towns of Brookhaven and Islip.
Albany, New York-based Key Capture Energy is majority-owned by South Korea’s SK E&S. The company said it has over 620 MW of BESS assets in operation and a project pipeline exceeding 10 GW.
