Construction of a 300 MW solar power plant has commenced in the Orangai rural district of Sauran district, Turkestan region, Kazakhstan. The launch of the project was marked by a ceremonial laying of a time capsule.
The project ranks among the largest renewable energy initiatives in the region. Once commissioned, the solar power plant is expected to boost the Turkestan region’s energy capacity, expand the share of renewable generation, and create new employment opportunities.
The ceremony was attended by Akim of the Turkestan region Nuralkhan Kusherov, who highlighted the project’s strategic importance for both the region and Kazakhstan as a whole. He underscored its contribution to energy security, economic diversification, and the development of clean energy. According to him, total investment in the project amounts to approximately KZT 160 billion, with around 500 jobs planned during the construction phase.
The regional akim also expressed gratitude to the President of Kazakhstan, the Government, relevant ministries and agencies, as well as partner company Energy China for their support, noting the potential for continued cooperation.
Speaking via video link, Nurlan Zhakupov, Chairman of the Board of Samruk-Kazyna National Welfare Fund JSC, stated that the Fund consistently supports renewable energy projects, and that the 300 MW solar power plant will make a tangible contribution to strengthening Kazakhstan’s energy security.
Han Chunlin, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Kazakhstan, described the project as a vivid example of the strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and China, emphasizing the significance of joint initiatives in the field of green energy.
China Energy Group President Ni Zheng, also speaking via video link, noted the importance of the project for the development of the national energy system and the expansion of international cooperation.
Kairat Maksutov, Chairman of the Board of Samruk-Energy JSC, said the project aligns with the company’s strategy to gradually transition to low-carbon generation and develop a modern energy system. He stressed that the project represents a long-term investment in Kazakhstan’s sustainable development.
Lin Xiaodan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of China Energy Engineering Overseas Investment Company, confirmed the company’s readiness to deliver the project on schedule in compliance with technical and environmental standards.
The ceremonial laying of the capsule was carried out by Nuralkhan Kusherov, Akim of the Turkestan region, Kairat Maksutov, Chairman of the Board of Samruk-Energy JSC, and Lin Xiaodan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of China Energy Engineering Overseas Investment Company.
Once fully operational, the solar power plant will increase the share of renewable energy in the Turkestan region and create favorable conditions for attracting investment and establishing new industrial facilities, supporting the region’s sustainable development.
