QatarEnergy has signed an agreement with Samsung C&T’s Engineering & Construction Group to build one of the world’s largest solar power plants in Dukhan, about 80 kilometres west of Doha.

The project will be developed in two phases with a total capacity of 2,000 megawatts (MW) by mid-2029. Once complete, it will double Qatar’s solar power generation capacity and contribute to the country’s renewable energy targets.

The agreement was signed at QatarEnergy’s headquarters by Minister of State for Energy Affairs, President and CEO of QatarEnergy, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, and Samsung C&T President and CEO Sechul Oh, in the presence of Kahramaa President Abdulla bin Ali Al-Theyab and senior executives.

The first phase of the Dukhan project will deliver 1,000 MW to the Kahramaa grid by late 2028. The plant will employ a solar tracker system and advanced inverters designed to withstand Qatar’s high temperatures.

Al-Kaabi said the project represents “an important milestone” in advancing Qatar National Vision 2030 and QatarEnergy’s goal of generating more than 4,000 MW of renewable energy by 2030.

Once operational, Dukhan, together with Al-Kharsaah, Mesaieed, and Ras Laffan solar plants, is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 4.7 million tonnes annually and supply up to 30% of Qatar’s peak electricity demand.
