Turkish companies are ready to acquire a stake in the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), which is being constructed in Türkiye with Russian investment.

Renewables.Az reports, citing Reuters, that Russian President Vladimir Putin made the statement while visiting an exhibition held as part of the Russia–Africa Summit.

According to Putin, the project's total investment cost is approximately $25 billion, with financing provided entirely by Russia.

“We are building the plant, operating it, and owning it. Now some Turkish companies also want to participate in this process and purchase a portion of the shares. We welcome this,” Putin said.

Russia's state nuclear corporation Rosatom, currently the project's sole shareholder, may sell a stake of up to 49% to partner investors to share the investment burden.

In April 2026, Rosatom announced that it had begun negotiations with Turkish companies regarding joint ownership of the Akkuyu NPP. Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev said in October that progress had been made in the discussions.

The Akkuyu NPP, under construction in Türkiye's Mersin province, is the country's first nuclear power plant. It will consist of four reactor units, each with a capacity of 1,200 MW, bringing the total installed capacity to 4,800 MW. The project is being implemented under an intergovernmental agreement signed between Russia and Türkiye in 2010.
