Saudi Arabia’s Al Yamamah Steel Industries Co has begun commercial operations at its new wind energy systems factory in Yanbu Industrial City, marking a milestone in the kingdom’s push to expand its renewable energy supply chain.

The facility, inaugurated under the patronage of the minister of energy Abdulaziz bin Salman, has an annual production capacity of 50,000 tonnes of steel towers, the company said.

Supported and supervised by the Ministry of Energy, the project aims to bolster local manufacturing for the country’s clean energy transition and support the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.

The factory will produce steel towers over 130 metres in height and up to six metres in diameter, designed to accommodate the latest generation of wind turbines.

In July, Al Yamamah signed two contracts to supply wind towers to projects being built by SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction Co Ltd. The first, worth SAR 35.7 million (USD 9.5m/EUR 8.2m), covers the Al Ghat wind farm, while the second, valued at SAR 33 million, is for the Waad Al-Shamal wind farm.

The new plant is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to localise renewable energy industries as it targets 50% of electricity generation from clean sources by 2030.
