Azerbaijan developing mechanism to recognize origin of electricity in green energy corridors

Azerbaijan is developing a mechanism for recognizing the origin of electricity traded through green energy corridors, Deputy Energy Minister Orkhan Zeynalov said at Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026), Renewables.az reports via Report.

Zeynalov said the outlines of a more integrated regional energy system were already taking shape through four major corridors: the Caspian-Black Sea-Europe Green Energy Corridor, the Central Asia-Azerbaijan Green Energy Corridor, the Azerbaijan-Türkiye Interconnector, and the Azerbaijan-Georgia-Türkiye-Bulgaria Energy Corridor.

He noted that Azerbaijan is developing these projects in cooperation with regional and international partners, reflecting a shared commitment to a more interconnected, secure and sustainable energy future.

According to Zeynalov, the participating countries are moving beyond national energy strategies toward a more integrated regional energy system.

However, he stressed that physical interconnection alone would not be enough for cross-border renewable electricity trade to realize its full environmental, economic and commercial value.

"A credible and verifiable claim that electricity has been generated from renewable sources is what defines 'green electricity.' This is where Renewable Energy Certificates, or RECs, play a crucial role," he said.

Zeynalov noted that RECs provide a transparent mechanism allowing producers, traders, consumers and regulators to verify the renewable attributes of electricity.

He added that such certificates help prevent double counting and build confidence that renewable electricity generated in one market and exported to another will be reliably recognized across different jurisdictions.

"In other words, while green corridors create the physical links, certification systems provide the foundation of trust that enables cross-border renewable electricity trade to function effectively," Zeynalov said.

He added that interconnection, transparency and trust together would help turn shared renewable energy potential into genuinely integrated energy systems.
