Azerbaijan and Türkiye have agreed to accelerate the implementation of energy projects, Azerbaijani Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov said Saturday.
"We discussed the next phase of our energy cooperation in Istanbul with my dear colleague Alparslan Bayraktar, Türkiye's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. We agreed to accelerate the implementation of the Azerbaijan (Nakhchivan)-Türkiye Energy Interconnector and the Azerbaijan-Georgia-Türkiye-Bulgaria Green Energy Corridor projects," Shahbazov wrote on X.
They also explored potential cooperation opportunities within the framework of the Caspian-Black Sea-Europe Green Energy Corridor. "These regional energy connectivity projects will represent our next joint contributions to strengthening energy security," he noted.
According to the Ministry of Energy, satisfaction was expressed at the meeting regarding the development of the strategic energy partnership between the two countries in all directions. It was emphasized that the political will and support of the heads of state play a decisive role in the realization of projects in the electricity sector, similar to important projects like Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan and TANAP.
The results of the studies conducted by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK) on the Azerbaijan (Nakhchivan)-Türkiye energy interconnector were reviewed. It was stated that the transmission of 1 GW of electricity from Nakhchivan to Türkiye in the initial stage is promising. It was noted that in the future, the project will enable the transmission of electricity to Türkiye not only from sources in Azerbaijan but also from Central Asia. The prospects for the participation of investors from Azerbaijan and Turkey in the project were evaluated.
Additionally, the strengthening of the contractual and legal framework, the feasibility study, and the establishment of a Joint Venture for the "project on the transmission and trade of green electricity between Azerbaijan, Georgia, Türkiye, and Bulgaria" were discussed. It was agreed to accelerate the implementation of the project. Furthermore, information was provided on the results of the feasibility study regarding the viability of the "Caspian - Black Sea - Europe Green Energy Corridor" project, and opportunities for cooperation with Turkey on the project were evaluated.
During the conversation, an exchange of views was held regarding Türkiye's hosting of COP31 and cooperation within the framework of the next meeting of the "Azerbaijan-Türkiye Energy Forum"
