Türkiye aims to increase its total installed nuclear power capacity to 10 gigawatts (GW) by 2040 under its “National Energy 2040” strategy.
Renewables.az reports that Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar announced the target during the launch of the “National Energy 2040” strategy held in Istanbul on November 5.
According to the minister, Türkiye plans to develop at least 5 GW of additional nuclear power capacity alongside the 4.8 GW Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant to achieve this target.
Under the strategy, nuclear energy is expected to meet 11% of Türkiye's total electricity demand by 2040. This is projected to help avoid approximately 15 billion cubic meters of natural gas imports annually.
Türkiye also plans to further expand its nuclear power capacity in the longer term, targeting a total installed capacity of 20 GW by 2050.
At least 5 GW of this capacity is expected to come from small modular reactors (SMRs).
The “National Energy 2040” strategy identifies strengthening energy security, increasing domestic energy production and reducing dependence on imported energy resources as key priorities.
