Turkmenistan is studying the possibility of participating in a project to lay an energy cable along the bottom of the Caspian Sea for electricity export, Abdulla Jelilov, senior officer of the foreign economic relations and export department of the State Energy Corporation Turkmenenergo under the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan, told Report on the sidelines of WUF13.

According to him, Turkmenistan is simultaneously constructing a combined cycle power plant in Turkmenbashi with a capacity of 1,574 megawatts, which in the future could become a key source of generation for export supplies.

"We are studying the issue of laying a cable along the bottom of the Caspian Sea. And we are currently building a combined cycle power plant in Turkmenbashi with a capacity of 1,574 megawatts. And once it is built, it will be possible through this station and via the cable along the bottom of the Caspian Sea to export electricity to Azerbaijan or from there onward to other countries," he said.

Jelilov noted that this issue is regularly discussed within the framework of intergovernmental commissions between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, a final decision has not yet been made.

"For now, this issue remains open. But we want to implement this project," he added.

According to the representative of Turkmenenergo, the project could be economically beneficial for all participants, with Azerbaijan being considered as an important transit country for further export of electricity to other states.
