According to the report “Renewable Energy and Jobs: Annual Review 2025”, published by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the International Labour Organization (ILO), global employment in the renewable energy sector has reached 16.6 million jobs.

Despite this growth, women account for only around 32 percent of the sector’s workforce worldwide.

The report highlights that although the renewable energy industry is generally more inclusive than other energy sectors, women are still concentrated primarily in administrative and support roles. Their participation in technical positions and decision-making roles remains comparatively low.

According to the report, women’s representation varies across occupational categories:

  • Administrative and support roles: approximately 45%;

  • Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM): approximately 28%;

  • Technical and vocational positions: approximately 22%;

  • Senior management and leadership roles: approximately 19%.

Experts note that the global energy transition requires not only technological change but also social transformation. Increasing women’s participation in the energy sector—particularly in technical and leadership positions—is therefore essential.

The report emphasizes that strengthening gender equality will require expanding women’s access to technical education, increasing vocational training opportunities, and fostering more inclusive workplaces. These measures can contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive development of the renewable energy sector.

According to experts, broader participation of women in the sector will be key to ensuring that the global energy transition is both successful and equitable.

The development of the renewable energy sector in Azerbaijan is creating new job opportunities for women, and the number of women working in this field continues to grow day by day.
