A training was conducted by Special Communication and Information Security State Service (SCISSS) for employees of state bodies in the energy sector. The training was organized within the framework of the “Cyber Polygon” project, jointly implemented by SCISSS and Romania’s National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics under NATO’s Science for Peace and Security Programme, and was dedicated to the topic “Introduction to cybersecurity in the energy sector and the capabilities of the cyber polygon platform”.

During the training, examples of targeted cyberattacks carried out by international cyber groups and directed at energy infrastructures were presented, highlighting cyber threats specific to the energy sector; presentations were delivered on the security risks of energy infrastructures, the importance of protecting critical infrastructure, security requirements for state-significant energy facilities, and the rules for their auditing.

In addition, the functional and technical capabilities of the “Cyber Polygon” platform, a joint project of SCISSS and Romania’s National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics, were presented to the training participants.

It should be noted that the Cyber Polygon platform has been put into use for sector specialists of the energy sector in the “Information Security Testing” laboratory established by SCISSS at Baku Higher Oil School.

Such trainings serve to increase the level of preparedness of organizations operating in the energy sector for cyber incidents, to develop decision-making and coordination skills based on real threat scenarios, as well as to identify gaps by testing the security level of the critical infrastructures they own in a virtual environment, and ultimately to strengthen the information security resilience of the energy sector of national importance.
