As a result of large-scale energy projects implemented in Azerbaijan, the share of renewable energy in the country's energy balance is expected to increase from the current 13% to approximately 38%, Anar Guliyev, Chairman of the State Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture, said at the ministerial roundtable held within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku.
"One of the projects under implementation will generate 500 million kilowatt-hours of energy per year. At the same time, the Khizi-Absheron wind power plant project being executed by ACWA Power will become the largest wind energy project in the region. Azerbaijan plans to present the Smart and Sustainable Settlements for Safe Return initiative package within the framework of WUF13 in cooperation with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the Baku Center for Climate and Peace. The initiative will serve to support international standards on sustainable recovery and reconstruction."
In his remarks, Chairman of the State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture and WUF13 National Coordinator Anar Guliyev highlighted that more than half of Azerbaijan’s liberated territories will be designated as green zones, with projects in Garabagh and East Zangezur based on sustainable development principles.
He added that renewable energy, environmental approaches, and modern urban planning are key priorities, and noted that around $14.7 billion has been invested in infrastructure and housing over the past five years.
