Global Wind Day, celebrated every year on June 15, was first marked in 2007 as a joint initiative of WindEurope and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).
Global Wind Day aims to raise awareness of the importance of wind as a renewable energy source and its role in reshaping energy systems, decarbonizing the economy, and tackling climate change. The event is celebrated through various activities around the world, organized by international organizations, national associations, and companies operating in the wind energy sector.
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), global installed wind power capacity has surpassed 1.3 terawatts. China, the United States, Brazil, India, and Germany currently rank among the world's top five countries in terms of installed wind energy capacity.
In Azerbaijan, wind power generation has seen significant growth following the commissioning of the 240 MW Khizi-Absheron Wind Power Plant in January this year. The project was developed by Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power. During the January-April period of 2026, wind power generation in the country reached 327.5 million kWh, marking a 58-fold increase compared to the same period last year.
At the same time, the Azerbaijani government has signed a number of agreements with international companies for the development of onshore and offshore wind energy projects.
Azerbaijan's onshore wind energy potential is estimated at 3 GW, while the technical potential of offshore wind energy stands at 157 GW, highlighting the country's substantial renewable energy resources and long-term growth prospects in the sector.
